A large majority of Americans commute each and every day to work. Whether it be carpooling with fellow employees to save money on gas or just riding solo, most people do what they can to occupy their time to make their trip as painless as possible. Morning radio talk shows broadcast to millions of listeners every morning in hopes to take the listener’s mind off of work and instead get lost in their program. Radio talk show hosts such as Howard Stern get paid millions of dollars for the mere fact that advertisers are hoping they reach the millions of commuters each day. I alone commute almost 2 hours every day to work and have become a huge fan of radio talk shows. I never realized how much I appreciated these shows until the other day when I drove to work with a broken radio and nothing but silence. That same 2 hour commute felt like it was 5 hours, so I had to resort to some other things besides Howard to entertain me.
Instead of listening I decided to start watching all the other commuters who were passing me by. The first thing I noticed was just how many different makes and models of cars on the road today. Volvo, Mercedes, Acura, Honda, Toyota, BMW, Mazda, Volkswagen, Nissan, Saturn, etc, etc. And with each one of these cars come hundreds of different years, makes and models too… now that’s a lot of cars! I remember playing license plate tag as a kid trying to spot different states and different cars, and at that time it was hard to see anything besides Ford or Chevrolet on the road. Its almost unbelievable how many different vehicles are produced now compared to just 20 years ago….but why?
In the 70’s and 80’s most households only had one car to share instead of the three or four cars that a family averages today. Cars are much more affordable now due to the large increase in volume of foreign and domestic automobiles resulting in more cars being mass produced at lower costs. Recently there has been a major hit in the automotive industry with requests for bailouts, but statistics still show that even in a slacking economy, purchasing a new vehicle today still takes a smaller bite out of your wallet than it did years ago. Some dealerships are on record showing vehicles sold in the mid 80’s priced only a few thousand dollars more today. Then when you add in the much lower interest rates on car loans, even with higher car prices, payments are actually dramatically lower.
While everyone seems to complain about how expensive things are today, it doesn’t seem to have an affect on what they drive or how many cars they own. Just take a look around the next time you are commuting to work and spot all the different cars that pass by. Its no wonder that no matter what you do you will constantly find yourself in bumper to bumper traffic. It’s bad enough that you have that long commute to work every day, but when it takes you 3 hours to get there, don’t blame it on the minor fender bender that is holding everyone up, blame it on affordable cars!
