What is the point of using a pick on a bass Guitar?
Well there are many reasons, but I'll just cover the main ones.
Reason 1: Some people just can't play as fast with their fingers. Alot of people can't play fast with their fingers, and the pick just helps that problem. And especially with alot of speed metal songs, the tempo is just insane, and your fingers will wear out eventually.
Reason 2: You can get certain effects with pick on the bass. One of these effects is tremolo picking, you cant tremolo really fast on your fingers (unless you have some amazing finger picking skills)
Reason 3: Different sound, different tone. When using your fingers, you have this fat, thick sound that comes from the bass (which is the standard on most basses). When using a pick however, it provides a rich, almost baritone-guitar like sound.
Everybody's opinion is different. I use a pick every now and then on my bass. There are alot more reasons, that I can't think of at the moment. Some people say "Oh it makes a bad sound, and it takes away from the beauty of the bass guitar and how it's meant to only be played by fingers" That's absolutely wrong, The beauty of the bass guitar is to provide music and a decent bass melody in songs. Hope this answers your question.
